BEING REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR COMPANY

Mentors–can they help your business?

We've looked this week at the importance of being realistic about your company and its products. It's important that entrepreneurs be optimistic about their companies, but it's also critical that they be realistic. If decisions are to be good ones, they need to be based on facts, not the hopes and dreams that each of us holds as business owners. We've also looked at two groups that can help provide realistic data for owners: employees and customers.

Business mentors are another way for owners to get objective advice. Mentors are usually experienced business people willing to spend a few hours each month with an entrepreneur. Bringing business issues and problems to a mentor can help an entrepreneur get objective feedback. Just preparing for a meeting with a mentor can help an entrepreneur think about and frame some of the issues concerning the business. I've had mentors who have made a substantial difference in business decisions and outcomes. The right mentors will add real value to your business. They'll also help you be realistic about your business.
