BEING REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR COMPANY

The importance of questioning

If you want to improve your odds for success, improve the way you gather information. The questioning mind can be the best asset of a business owner. What have I missed? What changes are taking place in the market? Are my employees satisfied? Are relationships with my banker what they need to be to help assure financial stability? These are just some of the questions that every owner should be asking. In the process of answering these questions, it's important to get accurate answers and feedback. Don't rely on just your own instincts. Get information from those around you. Ask your key employees their opinion about the state of the company, and what they would do to improve things. Ask peers in the marketplace what their outlook is, and how they think the market is changing. Ask your banker how your company can improve as a customer and borrower. Having a questioning mind doesn't mean that you've lost your optimistic outlook. It just means that you're adding a touch of skepticism to the mix.
